Who’s the best sportsman, sportswoman, up-and-coming youngster, team-player, disability sportsperson, coach and veteran in the City?
With just over a month to go before nominations close for the annual Sport Worcester Recognition Awards, Secretary of City Council-backed Sport Worcester, Sarah Mackay, dearly wants to know – and she’s asking for nominations to enter into eleven categories to win prestigious awards marking their special skills and achievements on the field.
This year’s is the fourth Sport Worcester Recognition Awards contest, and already there’s fierce competition for accolades as the year’s foremost Junior and Senior Sportsman and Woman, Coach of the Year, Junior Team, Veteran Sportsperson, Disability Sportsperson and Community Sportsperson, with special awards for the Club reckoned to have made an outstanding achievement in the development of junior opportunities, and an Outstanding Contribution Award for those that have made a significant contribution in an administrative, organisational or other supportive role.
Sarah, Sports Development Officer for the City Council says that the event, which is open to participants in all sports who are living, studying or playing within the City, is a terrific opportunity to win recognition for their achievements and skills: “…essentially, it’s a great way of recognising and rewarding sports talent in Worcester.
“We’re looking for nominations from all areas of the community – schools, colleges, local sports clubs, organisations, youth clubs, community centres and, of course, friends and suitably-impressed spectators! Our aim is to raise the profile of sport in Worcester by creating and increasing opportunities for all while encouraging the development of quality and excellence, and we’re looking particularly for talented performers, dedicated coaches and notable contributions to the organisation and administration of a club in any sporting discipline.

Only six dual-use sports centres nationwide have been judged ‘Highly Commended’ by independent assessors Quest – and Worcester has two of them!
That’s the verdict as experts this week voted Nunnery Wood Sports Complex and St Johns Sports Centre among the UK’s top-flight sports and leisure venues.
More than 450 UK sports and leisure centres were tested on a variety of critical aspects including service planning, cleanliness, equipment, health and safety, customer care, management style and customer feedback as part of the Quest Performance Management Scheme – a project that included surprise visits by ‘mystery’ customers, one of which was in a wheelchair.
The resulting in-depth 48-page reports on both centres showed consistently high scorings right across the board.
“What it adds up to is that in the view of independent experts, two of the UK’s top complexes serving schools as well as the general public are both in Worcester. That’s a terrific accolade and the awards represent official recognition of high quality across the whole area of sports provision in Worcester” Mike Worsnop, the City Council’s Recreation Business Manager commented.
“It’s a major achievement both by and for the City” he said.
This is the third time both venues have been assessed in the Quest scheme, and though both centres have been highly ranked on every occasion, this year’s 2-point improvement by St Johns now positions the westside venture on a par with Nunnery Wood, long held as a model centre.
Now , both complexes are ranked as the UK’s best dual-use sports facilities in England.
‘Naturally, there is some friendly rivalry between Worcester’s two Council-run sports centres, so it’s only fitting that we’re now viewed as equals after being voted just a point or two behind Nunnery Wood on the past two occasions!” commented St Johns’ centre manager Ian Jakeways.
